Although many hydroelectric turbines have traditionally
used lignum vitae bearings, this dense, tropical
hardwood has become rare and protected, and availability is now confined to existing stocks of lumber. These are limited and, since the trees take hundreds of years to mature, new material will not be available once current supplies are exhausted.
While we can still furnish lignum vitae, Woodex's oil-impregnated rock maple has proven a viable
and less-expensive alternative in many applications,
as a thrust bearing material (left) and as a guide or quarter-block bearing material (below, right),
performing well for multiple years' operation.
